Dry cleaning is recommended by many manufacturers, but down pillows can also be washed in a home or commercial washing machine if needed. Fill the washing machine with hot water and 1/2 cup of non-detergent soap or detergent. Agitate for 30 seconds to mix in detergent.

Put two pillows; distribute them evenly in the wash drum. Press the pillows until the air is forced out and they have absorbed water. This may have to do several times then down naturally strong and resist saturation. Soak for two hours. This will allow time for surface stains to be removed and down to absorb soap. Rinse three times. It is important to be sure all detergent or soap is removed from down. Spin three times to express as much moisture as possible. Dry on medium to high heat. Remove every 15 or 20 minutes to fluff. Add a clean sneaker or tennis ball to fluff if desired. Drying can take several hours. Make sure there are no lumps of feathers in the pillow when drying is complete, as this indicates moisture remains.

Tips and warnings

Cleaning is best done in a front-loaded, non-agitated washing machine if possible. If your home computer is not large enough to accommodate your pillows, you can use a commercial machine. Also, make sure that the dryer is large enough for pillows to move freely and not be in constant contact with the heating element because the lid can burn.
