TBA Atlanta, GA, USA Marking her debut with Atlanta Opera, Kiera Duffy sings the role of Queen Tye in one of composer Philip Glass' earlier operas, Akhnaten. Based on the life and religious convictions of the pharaoh Akhenaten (Amenhotep IV), this work, according to the composer, is the culmination of his two other biographical operas, Einstein on the Beach and Satyagraha (about Mohandas Gandhi). These three people — Akhenaten, Einstein and Gandhi — were all driven by an inner vision which altered the age in which they lived, in particular Akhenaten in religion, Einstein in science, and Gandhi in politics. The performances will take place at the Schwartz Center at Emory University.

The young Spanish nobleman Belmonte must venture to the Turkish harem of Pasha Selim to rescue his beloved Konstanze and her maid Blondchen, who have been captured by pirates and sold to Pasha Selim. Will Belmonte, with the help of his servant Pedrillo, rescue them in time? Or will Osmin, the Pasha’s overseer, be victorious?
Composed during one of the happiest periods in Mozart’s life, the delightful music of The Abduction from the Seraglio reflects the joyousness of love triumphant.

Scored for a chamber ensemble of nine musicians plus soprano, its sound has been described as lustrous, like gleaming jewels. Maestro Lorin Maazel, in his final season with the Philharmonic, conducts.

The stage will be loaded with over 400 singers and musicians, including Kiera Duffy as soprano soloist. Also on the program is Copland’s Appalachian Spring, a ballet score that achieved widespread popularity as an orchestral suite. Copland was awarded the 1945 Pulitzer Prize for Music for the ballet.

This enchanting and magical opera abounds with exotic and beautiful melodies, including the famous Flower Duet and Lakmé’s virtuosic Bell Song. Kiera Duffy covers the role of Lakme and performs the role of Ellen in this gorgeous piece.
